Westport Public Schools To Continue Review Of Cell Phone Policy

Superintendent of Schools Thomas Scarice is planning a fact-finding visit to the Wilton school district to gather information.

WESTPORT, CT — As Westport Public Schools continues its review of its cell phone policy for students, officials are planning a fact-finding visit to the Wilton school district, which implemented a full cell phone ban this fall at the high school level.

In a message to parents and the district community last week, Westport Superintendent of Schools Thomas Scarice wrote that he intended to host some "town hall" meetings on the issue of cell phone and wearable technology restrictions. But he wants to gather information from Wilton's officials before hosting local discussions.

"In November, Wilton High School implemented a full smartphone ban," Scarice wrote. "Their experience has provided us with an opportunity to learn before finalizing any changes in our district.

"Wilton High School has generously offered to host a site visit for a team of Staples faculty, administrators, and students. This visit will likely take place in late January. After that, I will host the town hall events for Staples parents, and for students, that was originally planned for October/November."

Last spring, Scarice "recommended restricting access to smartphones and wearable technology during the school day across all grade levels," which is in place at the K-8 level. At Staples High School, limited access to such devices is allowed during non-instructional periods.

"This fall, I engaged with all Staples faculty in small groups to gather their input," Scarice said. "While some opinions varied, a strong majority supported moving toward greater restrictions on smartphone use, including a full ban during the school day."

Scarice added that the district will not rush finalizing a policy.

"We will take the time to learn, listen, and thoughtfully plan for the best path forward."
