Wilton’s First Selectman recently nominated Wilton’s largest employer and dedicated community partner, ASML, for the 2025 Aquarion Environmental Champion Award. We are pleased to announce that Aquarion has selected our candidate to be this year’s honoree in the Business category.

Since 2010, Aquarion has recognized outstanding advocates, leaders and innovators who are making a significant difference in the ecological health of our state. These Environmental Champions are separated into four different categories: Adult, Non-profit Organization, Business and Student (grades 9-12). Nominees are considered based on their work to preserve Connecticut’s natural resources, their fresh approach to sustainability issues, and their leadership in contributing to our State’s overall environmental vitality.

ASML was this year’s Large Business Environmental Champion in honor of their Environmental Management System – an integrated approach that is woven into all of their business practices. These guidelines help the company track their energy usage and carbon emissions so that they can improve productivity and efficiency by monitoring three major components: First, ASML aims to have all of their manufacturing plants and other buildings on their campuses be greenhouse gas neutral by the end of 2025, using renewable energy sources and compensating for any outstanding CO2 emissions; second, they are finding new ways to support environmentally friendly business travel and commuting options that incentivize greener choices among their employees; and third, they are designing products that reduce energy consumption and costs while improving their performance and market reach.

Beyond their immediate 2025 environmental goals, ASML is working with their industry partners to become greenhouse gas neutral on a global scale by 2040. Using internal bench marks and outside rating agency evaluations ASML continually measures the environmental impact of their supply chains, their manufacturing plants and offices, their distribution logistics, and their products and services. This effort stems from their Environmental, Social and Governance Strategy for Sustainability which aligns with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, a 17-point blueprint for global peace and prosperity that encourages growth in all nations that minimizes the negative impacts to people and the environment.

Michael Opuszynski, Program Manager, ASML Strategy Office, shared this about Aquarion’s recognition:

“ASML’s core values are Challenge, Collaborate, and Care which drive our belief that innovation and responsibility must go hand in hand. This award reflects the hard work of our entire team—people who care deeply about doing things better, cleaner, and more sustainably, as demonstrated in our engagement with our local community as well on the global stage with our commitment to a circular economy based in reuse and waste reduction. We are honored to share this recognition with our nonprofit community partners who work tirelessly to improve the environmental quality of our region – Ambler Farm, Norwalk River Valley Trail, Wilton Land Trust, and Woodcock Nature Center.”

ASML’s presence in Wilton as a thoughtful, forward seeing, energized partner only grows in importance. Town Hall was thrilled to be able to bring them the acknowledgment they deserved as leading environmental advocates in our state. At the awards ceremony held at the Beardsley Zoo on June 7th, I was glad to have the opportunity to say aloud what I had written in my nomination of ASML: Namely, that their importance to our town and state cannot be overstated. “They have proven time and again to be visionary leaders in science and technology, business, community advocacy and now the environment. Not only is ASML a world leader in advanced manufacturing but they grow and nurture skilled talent, are responsible stewards of the environment and champions of all our community nonprofits. We could not be prouder of their achievements and congratulate them on this well-deserved recognition.” Aquarion has awarded them $5,000 to donate to an environmental non-profit of their choosing, allowing their exemplary influence to continue. Please join me in giving ASML our heartiest congratulations.
