Brother-Sister Win at Woodbury Fire Dept's Fishing Event for Kids

More than 60 Children Braved Chilly Weather

WOODBURY – The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department awarded its prize for the most motivated angler to Colton Garceau at the free annual children’s fishing derby on Saturday morning May 10th, 2025. Colton’s sister Bailey Garceau won the Darleen Start award for best sportsmanship. The two are pictured with their trophies. The annual event started under chilly and cloudy skies but sun and blue sky soon encouraged the fisherfolk. The trophy for the biggest fish was won by Jake Fillie, with a 16-inch rainbow trout. Jake Pawelczyk was second with a 13-inch rainbow.

Fire Lt. Jason Hatstat, the organizer of the event, also thanked local donors for raffle prizes and financial support. He named Dayton construction. Kolesnik Law Firm, Woodbury Barber shop, the Gillette family, Firefighter Ryan Murphy, David Tinker excavating, Shaker Automotive group, Quassy Amusement Park, Manzi Insurance, Bud Hatstat, JLL Mechanical, Dotties Diner, Southbury Bakery, Kens Ace Hardware, Hardings trout hatchery, the Artibani family, Munson Lovetere Funeral Home, Colasanto Funeral Home, Connecticut Professional Water Services, and the King and Oneal Families.

More than 60 children under the age of 13 braved the weather to gather at the stocked farm pond on Railtree Hill Road, Woodbury. The event is named in honor of the late Chief Mel Snyder who was an avid fisherman and a popular member of the department. ###
