Kane to Tout CT's Pro-Consumer Law Before MA Legislature

State Sen. Rob Kane, R-32, will testify before Massachusetts lawmakers on Tuesday, Dec. 1, in favor of legislation to protect new car buyers.

The legislation, which Kane sponsored in Connecticut and is now state law, requires new car dealers to deliver a printed explanation of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act to the buyer at the time of the sale of a new motor vehicle.

The law specifically refers to the anti-tying provision of the Act, informing the purchaser that, “The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act… makes it illegal for motor vehicle manufacturers or dealers to void a motor vehicle warranty or deny coverage under the motor vehicle warranty simply because aftermarket or recycled parts were installed or used on the vehicle or simply because someone other than the dealer performed service on the vehicle.”

“This law in Connecticut is protecting consumers, and I want to help Massachusetts legislators do the same for Bay State residents,” Kane said in a prepared statement. “Our law in Connecticut adds some needed clarification for the consumer that the auto care industry was seeking for many years. Connecticut’s law really is a model for other states because it promotes competition in the repair industry while ensuring that consumers are aware of their rights under federal warranty law.”

Kane will testify at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Room 437 of the Massachusetts State House.

Kane represents Bethlehem, Bridgewater, Middlebury, Oxford, Roxbury, Seymour, Southbury, Washington, Watertown and Woodbury.
