The holiday season is about more than lights and celebrations — it’s also a meaningful time to give back and make a difference right here at home. We’ve rounded up a few organizations in and around Woodbury that could use a helping hand this season. This isn’t an all-inclusive list, but a starting point — be sure to contact each group directly to learn about their current needs, requirements and how you can best support their efforts.


Flanders Nature Center

The Flanders Nature Center in Woodbury provides environmental education, arts programming and land stewardship across more than 2,400 protected acres in the region. Volunteers can support seasonal events, help care for preserved land, assist with educational programs or lend expertise on committees that guide art, farming and conservation initiatives.

Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary

Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary is a Middlebury-based nonprofit that rescues, rehabilitates and provides lifelong care for farm animals that have been neglected or abused. As a volunteer, you can join monthly work days, transport supplies, assist with outreach and fundraising or help build and maintain the habitats that keep the animals safe.

Middlebury Historical Society

The Middlebury Historical Society preserves the town’s history through its growing collection of records, photographs and artifacts. Those interested in contributing can help digitize and catalog materials, support research and writing projects, assist with museum tasks or participate in special efforts like cleaning historic cemetery stones.

Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department

The Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department protects the community by responding to fires, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents and other urgent calls throughout town. Residents aged 18 and older can train to become volunteer firefighters, with all gear and instruction provided; certified EMS providers may join the Ambulance Auxiliary to support medical calls. Middlebury teens ages 14 to 18 can also get involved through the Juniors program, which offers hands-on experience and training.

New Opportunities’ mission is to help economically disadvantaged individuals across Northwest Connecticut build stability, self-sufficiency and long-term well-being.
