Nonnewaug Teacher Named Winner in ASAP Photography Celebration
Leeza Desjardins of NHS and her students sent in the most submissions to ASAP's Celebration of Young Photographers.
Nonnewaug High School teacher Leeza Desjardins is the winner in ASAP’s 5th Annual Celebration of Young Photographers.
Desjardins sent in the most student submissions — more than 40 — according to a press release from ASAP.
Students from grades 3-12, including public, private, and home-schooled students, were invited to submit a photograph reflecting on their interpretation of this year’s “My Best Photo” theme, within the categories of Portrait, Landscape, Abstract, or Black and White.

Sixty photographs were chosen from a pool of more than 200 images received from 39 different schools across the region.
Submissions were split up in to three groups by grade: 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. A cash prize of $200 will be awarded to the ‘Top Select’ from each group and to the teacher with the most submissions from their school.

- The Top Select from grades 3-5 is Hannah Travelstead with her photo titled “Jump for Joy.”
- The Top Select from grades 6-8 is Sean Desjardins with his photo titled “Hockey is Home.”
- The Top Select from the grades 9-12 is Rachel Piontkewicz with her photo titled “Loneliness.”
The artwork will be displayed in a professionally, curated gallery. A reception with wine, cheese and holiday treats will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Litchfield Historical Society, 7 South St., Litchfield.
Photographs and ASAP merchandise will be for sale. Tickets can be purchased at the ASAP website or by calling the office at (860) 868-0740.
