Region 15 Students Compete In 'You Be The Chemist' State Challenge
The 'You Be The Chemist Challenge' is an academic competition that encourages students in 5 to 8th grade to engage in chemistry concepts.
From Region 15 School District: Students from Memorial Middle School in Middlebury and Rochambeau Middle School in Southbury competed in the You Be The Chemist State Challenge held at Naugatuck Community College on April 29, 2017.
Students from Region 15 placed in the top three spots at the state-level You Be The Chemist Challenge. Triloshan Thilaikumaran from Rochambeau Middle School placed first, Ben Ecsedy from Memorial Middle School placed second, and Jeffrey Gao from Rochambeau Middle School placed third. Triloshan will represent Connecticut in the National Competition in Washington, DC in June. This is the second year in a row that Triloshan will be representing the state of Connecticut at the challenge.
The You Be The Chemist Challenge is an academic competition that starts at the school level and continues with local, state, and national challenge competitions. It is an interactive academic contest that encourages students in grades 5-8 to explore chemistry concepts and their real-world applications. The You Be The Chemist Challenge is a program organized by the Chemical Educational Foundation® (CEF), a national organization committed to enhancing science education. Diane Sirica at Rochambeau Middle School and Susan Johnson at Memorial Middle School volunteer to prepare students to participate in the program.

Year after year I am so proud to see so many of our Region 15 students participate in the You Be the Chemist challenge. It speaks to the strength of Region 15's science program and to the passion and dedication of our students. In the YBTC circuit, we have definitely become the team(s) to beat said Diane Sirica, Science teacher at Rochambeau Middle School.
