MIDDLEBURY—Republican delegates from Middlebury and Waterbury on Thursday night were unanimous in choosing Dr. William “Bill” Pizzuto as their candidate for the 71st House District seat left vacant recently by the retirement of longtime State Representative Tony D’Amelio.

A nominating convention was held at Shepardson Community Center, where Pizzuto accepted the party endorsement and told the crowd he’s been honored by the support he’s received since announcing his candidacy for a special election that will be held Feb. 22. Having already achieved his fundraising goals, Pizzuto added that his campaign for office is already in motion.

“That so many people have reached out and are placing their faith in me to serve as their voice in Hartford is truly humbling, and if I’m fortunate enough to win election as their state representative next month I’ll certainly cherish that awesome responsibility,” said Pizzuto, who is retiring as the Director of the University of Connecticut campus in Waterbury.

Aside from his position at UConn, Pizzuto currently serves on the advisory boards of Waterbury Hospital, Savings Bank of Danbury, Naugatuck Valley Community College, and the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board. His past service includes chairman of the Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce, Alderman for the City of Waterbury, as well as numerous boards and commissions including the Police Board, Fire Board and Civil Service Commission.

“Billy embraced and has dedicated himself to public service, and he represents the values that are important to the 71st and the people of Waterbury and Middlebury,” said D’Amelio, who has backed Pizzuto after retiring to spend more time with family and running his restaurant. “His compassion and commitment to others is unparalleled and I’m proud to support him.”

Pizzuto said his primary focus will be to work toward making Connecticut a more affordable place to live and create jobs, and to confront the crime crisis that’s affecting so many communities statewide. What’s more, Pizzuto said he’s looking to participate in the conversation about delivering long term stability in state finances.

“I’m really eager to get out there and introduce myself to as many voters as possible ahead of Election Day and to hear what their concerns and ideas are,” he said.

Pizzuto lives in Middlebury with his wife, Michele. He has two daughters Stephanie and Jessica.
