"Try the doorknob first," say Woodbury Firefighters in Forced Entry Drill

Also Roof Entry Exercise with Chainsaw in Hand

WOODBURY – A dozen Woodbury Firefighters practiced using a chain saw on a steeply pitched roof and forcing open a bolted door in a drill Saturday Sept 27th. “It was sunny and mild but we are preparing for fires and rescue operations on cold, dark, icy winter nights,” said Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan. “This is a season when we have a lot of roof operations because of chimney fires. People burn all kinds of inappropriate material in a fireplace such as Christmas wrappings or wet softwood. The smoke condenses into creosote in the chimney and starts dangerous fires under the roof.” In photo one, Firefighter Zack Sweet carefully places the chain saw as he climbs a steep roof backed by fellow Firefighter Nick Abouzeid. In photo two, Firefighters Mitch Chester and Roger Sicard check a steel hinge prior to forcible entry through a practice steeldoor. They are under the watchful eye of Deputy Chief Dave Lampart whose counsel is, “Always try the doorknob first.”
