Woodbury Firefighters & Ambulance Personnel Join in Hazmat Drill

Dummy Victim Found Lying in Pool of Muriatic Acid

WOODBURY – Woodbury Volunteer Firefighters and the town Ambulance Association joined forces Saturday October 25th in a hazmat (hazardous materials) drill to rescue a dummy victim lying in an acid spill. In the scenario devised by Firefighter Pano Koukopoulos, a non-English speaking assistant found his unconscious boss sprawled in liquid from a fallen 50-gallon drum of muriatic acid. The corrosive substance is routinely used to clean concrete but causes asphyxiation via pulmonary edema when inhaled. Under Fire Lt Jason Hatstat as incident commander, firefighters in full protective gear established a 150-foot safety zone around the department’s dummy and removed it for immediate treatment by ambulance personnel. When not responding to fire or rescue calls, Mr.Koukopoulos is a professor of environmental studies at Western Connecticut State and Mr. Hatstat is an inspector at Aquarion Water Co. Some 25 Woodbury firefighters and five ambulance personnel participated in the exercise held at the Middle School parking lot. ###
