Woodbury Firefighters Drill on Extraction Rescues
Motor Vehicle Accidents are Largest Single Category of Calls

WOODBURY 19Jun25 -- Woodbury Volunteer Firefighters pay rapt attention to latest techniques in a drill Wednesday June 18th on extracting victims from car crashes, fires, and similar rescue operations. Firefighters pictured (l-r) are Zach Sweet, Fire Capt Corey Shaker, Amy Clark, Jonathan Laukaitis, Allyson Modica, Fire Lt Jason Hatstat, and Steve Anctil. Equipment in use at auto
crashes ranges from powerful hydraulic separators used to rip apart jammed automobile frames to mundane shaving cream that prevents flying splinters when sawing through windshields. Of more than 420 call-outs last year, the largest single category was response to motor vehicle accidents. Extraction also involves firefighters rescuing anyone from a trapped or dangerous situation, often in zero visibility while battling fire, toxic fumes, live wires, and other dangers.
