Woodbury Firefighters in Search & Rescue Drill

Realistic Exercise in Abanonded Building Filled with Articifical Smoke

WOODBURY March 29th 2025 – Woodbury Firefighters practiced search=and-rescue operations in a vacant, smoke-filled building on Saturday March 29th. Said Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan, “It’s easy to get disoriented in an unfamiliar building when you can’t see. You open a door that you think leads to a hallway and it’s a closet or a flight of stairs. We want firefighters to know in advance how to get in, search by touch, and get everyone out safely from a burning, smoky building fixed with toxic fumes.”

Added Deputy Chief Dave Lampart, “Small children hide from things that scare them. The very elderly often cannot get outside on their own and wait to be rescued. That means we have to search, sometimes by touch through closets, under beds and in remote corners while fighting flames, toxic fumes, and destruction. That’s why we drill for this and other situations.”

The drill was in an abandoned veterinary clinic on Main Street South made available to the department for the exercise. Firefighters did not know the address in advance so the complex, unfamiliar building and the dense, artificial smoke made the exercise a realistic event, Chief Morgan said. ###
