Unique merchants and holiday cheer will fill the Sphinx Club this weekend for the Junior League of Washington's annual Holiday Shops, raising money for literacy programs.

Friday marks the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's assassination. Join the FreeWalkers for a 22-mile walk, from the Theodore Roosevelt memorial to JFK's grave at Arlington Cemetery, in remembrance of the president and other lives given to national service.

Where: Meet at Theodore Roosevelt Island before 6 a.m. for registration, and walk to Arlington Cemetery for a 2 p.m. ceremony.
