76-year-old Family Fish Market Closes Its Doors For Good

Cannon's Fish Market, which has been closed since August, will not reopen.

The owner of Cannon's Fish Market announced to the Washingtonian on Wednesday that the store will not reopen.

The shop has been closed since August when owner, Bobby Moore, posted a sign in the front window to inform customers that he would be taking "the next few months" off for medical reasons. Moore told the Washingtonian that working in the fish market since age 12 has caused him several problems with his back, knees and hips.

Moore is now leasing the space to the Italian restaurant next door, Il Canale. He is currently waiting for architectural approval to connect the two spaces, and it could be months before Il Canale's expansion is approved, he said.

"Cannon’s closure is a loss for Georgetown and for Washington, where there are fewer and fewer free-standing fish markets," wrote Carol Ross Joynt in her Washingtonian article.
