Armed Man Jumps White House Fence

The incident furthered discussions of setting up checkpoints in the White House area.

A man scaled the security wall to the White House and made it into the mansion with a knife before agents stopped him on Friday, according to ABC7 News.

Omar J. Gonzalez, 42, an army veteran who served from 1997 to 2003 and 2005 to 2012, was carrying a 3.5 inch serrated knife as he ran up to the White House, ABC7 News reports.

Gonzalez will appear in federal court Monday with charges of unlawfully entering a restricted building or grounds while carrying a deadly or dangerous weapon.

The U.S. Secret Service is having discussions about the possibility of setting up checkpoints around the White House, a law enforcement official told WTOP. Although there has been talk of upping the security before, the incident with Gonzalez has resurfaced discussions on the matter.

Gonzalez’s ex-wife Samantha Bell told ABC7 News that she split from him in 2010 because of his alleged mental condition – post-traumatic stress disorder – was worsening.

Gonzalez reportedly has been living out of his truck and carrying a knife on him for years, Bell’s son Jerry Murphy told ABC7 News.
