Coast Guard Suspends Search For Missing Man In Potomac River

After searching over 100 square miles in the Potomac, Coast Guard suspended the search for a man who went missing after his boat overturned.

GEORGETOWN, DC — After searching over 100 square miles in the Potomac River, Coast Guard suspended the search for a man who went missing after his boat overturned Monday.

The man was one of three people who ended up in the water after their on pontoon boat overturned just before 11 a.m. Monday. They were doing construction work near the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Two people were rescued. After searching about 108 square miles in the Potomac River, from Arlington, Virginia to Maryland Point, Maryland, the search for the third man was suspended at 9 p.m. Monday.

“We put a lot effort into this search before deciding to suspend it,” Cmdr. Sara Wallace, chief of response at Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region, said in a statement. “The decision is always a difficult one to make. We would like to send our condolences to the family and everyone affected by this tragedy.”

The Coast Guard worked with D.C. Fire and EMS, Alexandria Fire Department, U.S. Park Police, D.C. Police Department and D.C. Harbor Patrol in the search.
