Gym Tax Arrives Oct. 1

New tax on businesses begins next week.

Previously tax-free health centers, gym memberships, and yoga studios will face taxes beginning at the start of next month.

The D.C. Council voted earlier this year to add a controversial tax to wellness-related businesses.

The 5.75 percent tax put into effect Oct. 1.

It is expected to bring the city around $5 million yearly to offset tax cuts and save taxpayers up to $143 million a year, according to The Washington Post.

D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson defended the tax because of the long-term benefits for the city, ABC7 News reported when it was approved in June.

Various D.C. gyms are having “beat the tax” deals until Sept. 30 including:
