D.C. Ranks as Most Expensive City in the Nation to Live In
District residents pay above the average U.S. rates for housing, according to a report.

After taking household expenses into account, D.C. has been named the most expensive city in the country to live in.
According to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report Housing: Before, During, and After the Great Recession, in 2012 the average cost of housing in the country was $16,887. D.C., San Francisco, and New York all trumped that number.
Housing made up the largest share by taking up 33 percent of average annual expenditures and the price for housing has increased in the District over the years.

The study explored cities with a population of at least one million. After gathering information from 1,000 D.C. residents and 4,000 New York, it was found that the average income was $116,000 for D.C. and $81,000 for New York.
