Students and community members welcomed the addition with native plants.

British School of Washington hosted a planting event at 3 p.m. Thursday in honor of the opening of a community garden.

Members of the Anacostia Watershed Society and contractors worked over the summer to create the planting area. The community celebrated the garden’s unveiling by planting a variety of native plants.

District Department of the Environment runs the RiverSmart Schools program to select areas to promote innovative landscaping, improve the appearance of school grounds, and build community pride.
