D.C. Teacher's Homework Assignment: Compare President Bush to Hitler

A McKinley Middle School teacher created the homework assignment.

An unnamed D.C. sixth-grade teacher assigned students to read two texts and then compare and contrast former President George W. Bush and Adolf Hitler on Tuesday.

The Venn diagram homework assignment troubled at least one person as it was seen as offering more opinion than fact, as well as being disrespectful to the office of the president.

“No DCPS curriculum materials suggest in any way that teachers should compare the texts in this manner or compare Hitler to any other individual,” District of Columbia Public Schools released in a statement.

The statement said that teachers are given outlined topics and have flexibility to design day-to-day lessons for their students. One of the units covers War and Peace so students can explore different perspectives.

District of Columbia Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson responded on Twitter.

“The school will also send a letter home to families explaining the incident and offering to address any additional questions should they arise,” the statement said.
