Former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry Memorial Services

The public is welcome to pay respects at the services Dec. 4 to 6.

There will be multiple services held to honor the four-time D.C. Mayor and Ward 8 City Councilman Marion Barry.

He passed away at United Medical Center around midnight Nov. 23 after being released from Howard University Hospital the night before.

Barry served as mayor of the District from 1979 to 1991 and 1995 to 1999.

D.C. government and school employees can take up to two hours of administrative leave to pay respects to Barry.

The following events will pay tribute to the former D.C. mayor who spent 40 years in public service:

  • Brief ceremony to receive casket
    • Dec. 4 at 9 a.m.
    • Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue
    • Public welcome to give condolences for 24 hours
  • Procession to church
    • Dec. 5 at 10 a.m.
    • Will travel through all eight wards
    • Specific route not announced yet
  • Musical and video tribute
    • Dec. 5 from 3 to 6 p.m.
    • Temple of Praise, 700 Southern Avenue SE
  • Community memorial service
    • Dec. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m.
    • Temple of Praise, 700 Southern Avenue SE
  • All-day celebration
    • Dec. 6
    • Washington Convention Center in Halls C and D, 801 Mount Vernon Place NW
    • Viewing hours from 8 to 11 a.m.
    • Memorial service from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
