Ingredients:
- 4 cups milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 12 large egg yolks
- ½ cup bourbon
- 1 cup chilled heavy cream
- Grated nutmeg (optional)
Directions:
- Separate 12 egg yolks from the whites in a large bowl and whisk together.
- In a medium saucepan, add milk and sugar over medium heat.
- Whisk the two ingredients together for 1 to 2 minutes or until the sugar is dissolved.
- While still whisking the egg yolks, pour the hot milk and sugar mixture into the yolks.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan over medium-low heat - do not let it simmer.
- Stir the mixture often for about 20 to 25 minutes or until it is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
- Strain the mixture into a bowl and add the cream. *To make alcoholic, add ½ cup of bourbon as well during this step.
- Cool completely, cover with plastic wrap, and put it in the refrigerator until chilled and garnish with nutmeg.
