New D.C. West End Library and Fire Station Break Ground

Mayor Vincent Gray will host the ceremony celebrating the soon-to-be library, fire station, and living units Dec. 15.

A groundbreaking ceremony Monday will mark the beginning of construction of the new West End Library and Fire Station.

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray will host the ceremony on site along with other community leaders from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday.

The future project is planned to have a 21,000-square-foot library and 7,300-square-foot retail space. The buildings will be topped by 71 condos and 93 rentals. The new fire station will have 55 units and an eight-court squash facility as well as a full-service restaurant on top.

EastBanc Inc., a real estate redevelopment company, was selected to develop the space in March 2010. The company has been working on plans for Squares 37 and 50, 2301 L Street NW, with the District’s administration over the past few years.

EastBanc recently bought the Georgetown Post Office, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, where it relocated its headquarters.
