New Slogans Revealed for Marijuana Legalization Campaign
On Nov. 4, D.C. voters decide if Initiative 71 to legalize marijuana passes.

If Initiative 71 passes, D.C. adults ages 21 and older will be allowed to have up to two ounces of marijuana and grow a certain number of plants in their homes.
A poll by The Washington Post reveals that 63 percent of registered D.C. voters are in favor of marijuana legalization.
“Legalize” will be the main slogan for the campaign. The bright red poster will feature two smaller messages: “vote to refocus police priorities” and “legalization ends discrimination.”

Marijuana possession arrests in D.C. are among the highest in the country, according to the Post. African Americans made up eight out of 10 arrests.
According to the Post, advocates chose the slogan for its simplicity, and neither of the two smaller messages were tested among focus groups or polled.

Initiative 71 would allow the D.C. Council and mayor to set the sale and tax of the plant. D.C. would be the third state to give that authority following Colorado and Washington. This would not directly contradict the federal drug laws because the state regulates the sale.
