Local Weston Black Student Union Host Black History Festival

In honor of Black History Month, the theme of this year's festival was HBCU Homecoming

On Friday, Feb. 24, Sagemont Preparatory School’s Black Student Union hosted a Black History Festival at the school. The theme of this year’s festival was HBCU Homecoming: Celebrating Leaders Making Black History Today as a tribute to the role Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) have played in molding some of the nations most influential leaders. During the event, the Black Student Union honored HBCU Howard University alumni and U.S. House of Representatives for Florida District 20 Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick with its Community Trailblazer Award.

The festival featured notable African Americans in South Florida who shared their experiences and insight in school-wide educational sessions on social justice, STEM, Arts/Literature, fashion and sports/entertainment, as well as a fashion show sponsored by FlySupply Fashion Apparel, highlighting local Black fashion designers and entrepreneurs. Members of the African American Divine Nine Fraternities and Sororities were also in attendance.
