Hillsborough County, FL — Girl Scout Troop 3518 completed their troop Bronze Award project by building owl houses for the Raptor Center of Tampa Bay. Bronze Award projects are team projects. It is the 3rd highest award in Girl Scouts. Junior level girls learn to collaborate, explore their community, choose and plan their project, put their plan in motion and spread the word to educate and inspire others. The girls of troop 3518 are in 5th grade this school year.

After the girls decided on the project, they applied and received a mini-grant from the Hillsborough Water & Soil Conservation District to pay for supplies. The HSWCD helps eligible producers and landowners secure grants in their work to voluntarily implement practices to protect soil, water, air, wildlife habitats and related natural resources.

Troop 3518 were inspired to help the owls, when Ms. Nancy, President of the Raptor Center, visited their troop with two rescue screech owls last year. The Raptor Center of Tampa Bay is a non-profit organization that is working to build a wildlife rehabilitation facility in East Hillsborough County. They rescue, treat, and rehabilitate over 1,000 birds and animals each year. Ms. Nancy returned at the project completion for another learning opportunity for the girls. She brought along a screech owl and a great horned owl and took back with her all of the newly constructed owl houses!

A big thank you to Emma's Grandpa Bob who helped us immensely by creating “owl house kits” so the girls would have all the necessary supplies to build the houses. He then walked them through the process of putting the houses together at the troops event at the end of September.

Troop Leader, Ms. Crystal reflects, “As I watched all of the girls today, as their troop leader, I was so proud of all of their hard work and dedication, but also their willingness to help one another.🦉They all worked so well together and enjoyed this project. Knowing they were going to help the Owl population was a cherry on top.”
