$2 Million Intersection Project Opens Public Comments: County

Locals are welcome to give virtual feedback relating to a Brandon intersection project that is expected to improve truck traffic and safety.

BRANDON, FL —A future $2 million intersection improvement project in Brandon that will likely improve truck traffic opened Monday for public comment, Hillsborough County government said.

Upcoming construction at the intersection of North Valrico Road and Sydney Road is expected to begin in late 2023, according to officials. The redesign hopes to move the high volume of truck traffic at a smoother pace through the intersection, an engineering study said. It will comply with Vision Zero safety principles. Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all, its website said.

The $2.2 million intersection improvement project will include the following upgrades:

  • A left-turn lane in the northbound, southbound and westbound approaches
  • A pedestrian crosswalk and associated curb ramps in the east leg of the intersection
  • Curb and gutter at all four corners
  • New signal heads to accommodate new left-turn movements

Construction is expected to complete in mid-2024.
