Apollo Beach Suncoast Youth Conservation Center Offers Boating Safety Course

From the Suncoast Youth Conservation Center: The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is hosting a boating safety course at the Suncoast Youth Conservation Center in Apollo Beach Saturday, Jan. 14 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This beginner boating class will cover the knowledge needed to obtain a Boating Safety Education Identification Card in Florida. To operate a motorboat of 10 hp or greater, Florida law requires anyone who was born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, to successfully complete an approved boating safety course and obtain a Boating Safety Education Identification Card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

The cost for this course is $25, which includes the manual, “About Boating Safety.” The cost for couples sharing a manual is $15 per person. Topics covered during the class include:

• Types of boats and their different uses.
• Boating laws.
• Safety equipment.
• Safe boating strategies.
• Navigation.
• Overcoming boating problems.
• Trailering, storing and protecting your boat.
• Safety when hunting, fishing, water-skiing and river boating.

The Suncoast Youth Conservation Center is a marine-focused conservation education center on the shores of Tampa Bay that provides exciting learning opportunities for youth and families. It’s part of the FWC’s Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network, which is dedicated to Creating the Next Generation That Cares about fish and wildlife conservation.
