HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL —Hillsborough County has a new cold case unit made up of two special investigators who will look over the more than 200 cold cases in the county, Sheriff Chad Chronister said.

There are about 240 cold cases in the county. The investigators are looking over the cases, resubmitting evidence, re-interviewing witnesses and looking for small details that can help solve the cases.

"Some of the best investigators in Hillsborough County have looked through these cases, and for some reason they weren't able to solve them so, you know, now it's on us to pick those cases back up and figure out some way to move forward with them, " Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Special Investigator Joseph Dominick said. He has 22 years of law enforcement experience in Rochester, New York.

They have cases that date back to the 1950s, but HCSO Special Investigator Dan Bendig said they like to start with cases from where they think people would still be alive. Bendig has 25 years of police experience in New York. The team said their goal is to solve as many cases as they can.

“These investigators have storied careers and experience solving cold cases,” Chronister said. “They know every case can be solved and are working diligently to find the key information or evidence needed to bring answers to the victims' family and friends.”
