Crews from two counties and a Brandon veterinarian swung into action Monday to save a horse that was trapped in thick mud.

PLANT CITY, FL — A 25-year-old Plant City horse is back on solid ground thanks to a team that assembled to save her after she managed to get herself trapped in thick mud Monday night.

According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, its crews were called out to the 2200 block of Retreat Lane in Plant City Monday night. When they arrived, they found Kiersa, a 25-year-old horse, stuck in mud so deeply, she couldn't get herself out.

The first crews on the scene tried to break the suction the mud had on Kiersa’s legs, but the attempt was not successful. Realizing an ordinary effort would not suffice to free the creature, they decided to call in reinforcements.

The call for help was answered in a big way. Before long, the county’s heavy rescue crew was on the scene, along with Dr. Alexandra Urban from the Brandon Equine Medical Center. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office State Agricultural Response Team, Hillsborough County Public Works and RVR Horse Rescue also came to assist, Hillsborough Fire Rescue wrote in an email to media.

Since heavy equipment was needed to pull Kiersa out of the mud, Urban decided to put the horse under so she wouldn't inadvertently injure herself during the rescue. Once she was down, padded straps were placed around her body so she could be gently lifted out of the mud.

Shortly after being placed on solid ground, Kiersa work up and was able to stand. While no broken bones or other injuries were reported, fire rescue says Kiersa’s owners are monitoring her closely to make sure no health complications arise.
