What Should Open at the Bordered-Up Borders in Brandon?

What would you like to see in the space that once housed the big-box Borders retailer at the entrance to the Brandon Parkway and the Westfield Brandon mall, adjacent to the Brandon Crossroads shopping center of small businesses?

The final chapter for the Borders in Brandon played out in April, when liquidators held huge-discount sales, with “make- us an-offer” pricing for remaining bookshelves and fixtures.

Poster boards hung in the big-box store adjacent to the Brandon Crossroads shopping center, at the entrance to the Brandon Parkway and Westfield Brandon mall, on which patrons scribbled their thoughts and goodbyes to a bookstore that left them with fond memories.

“I enjoyed all of the wonderful experiences I got to have with all of you,” wrote Jasmine. “You guys are like family and I will miss you dearly. Here’s hoping for a better beginning.”

So now, what will be that "better beginning?"

Posted on the Brandon Patch Facebook page July 5 was the picture posted here as well, of a bordered up Borders surrounded by overgown grasses and shrubs. The question posed to Facebook readers: "Anybody missing Borders? Something has to go here, what should it be?"

Apparently, we're not the only ones wondering, as a host of responses quickly posted. Here's just a sampling:

Old Navy! Everyone in Brandon is tired of going all the way to Westshore to show there! We have been waiting a long time for one in our area!

How about a craft shop for adults and children....with classes....our children need to be kept busy!!!!

I like the Whole Foods idea or the indoor farmers market! That would be great!

Other wish-list suggestions included Gymboree, a skating rink, an indoor dog park, and, from Ryan Byrd, a long list of suggestions:

Truly gourmet cybercafe/cinebistro with unique sitting area layouts, plenty of plugs and two separate conference area spaces with state of the art videoconferencing and smartboard etc tech and soundproofed on the ground floor plus a sports bar upstairs with a outdoor wooden deck that spans the entire roof and that has a a place for music and 6 giant mammoth tvs ..the downstairs cafe would be soundproofed from the outside world so the sports bar could be as loud as it wanted to be!

Check out our Facebook page to see additional suggestions, then post your own as well.
