Want to Serve on a County Board or Council?

Residents are being sought to help make decisions on everything from the placement of public art to bullying

Ever wanted to serve on a Hillsborough County board or council?

The county's commissioners are looking for residents to serve on several county citizen advisory boards and councils. Residents must be registered voters in Hillsborough County.

These are voluntary positions that are unpaid.

The deadline to apply is Thursday, Jan. 27. Appointments will be scheduled for a county commission meeting in February or March.

Applications are available in the commissioners reception area on the second floor of the County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Boulevard downtown, by calling the Boards and Council's Coordinator at (813) 272-5826, or going to the county's website. Click on the "county commission" link on the left side of the page, then the "advisory boards and committees" link.

Here's information on the boards that have openings:

Anti-Bullying Advisory Committee

(Terms last three years, and a criminal background check is required. Meeting schedule is the fourth Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m.)

Central Park Community Redevelopment Agency Advisory Committee

(Term is two years. Meetings are the first Monday of the month at 10 a.m.)

Code Enforcement Board

(One alternate position is vacant. Must live in the unincorporated area of the county. Meetings are monthly, usually the second or third Friday at 9 a.m.)

Council on Aging

(Six new positions have been created. Terms are for two and three years. Background check required. Meeting schedule is to be announced).

Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County

(One term is for two years. Background check required. Meetings are bi-montly on Mondays at 5 p.m.)

Electrical Board of Adjustment, Appeals & Examiners

(One term is for two years. Meetings are quarterly on the third Thursday at 8:30 a.m.)

Family Child Care Home Advisory Board

(One term has expired, and two positions are vacant. Terms are for three years. Background check required. Meetings are the third Thursday at 7 p.m.)

Gas Board of Adjustment, Appeals & Examiners

(Two terms have expired, and one position is vacant. Terms are for two years. Meetings are the third Thursday at 11 a.m.)

Health Care Advisory Board

(One position is vacant. Term expires in June. Meetings are the third Thursday at 3 p.m.)

Health Council of West Central Florida

(One position is vacant, term is for two years. Meetings are every other month on the second Wednesday at 8 a.m.)

Historical Advisory Council

(Two positions are vacant. Meeting schedule is quarterly.)

Historical Resources Review Board

(Three positions are vacant. Meetings are monthly, usually on the third Tuesday at 3 p.m.)

Housing Finance Authority

(Two terms are expiring. Terms are four years. Meetings are monthly on the third Friday at 9:30 a.m.)

Human Relations Board

(One position is vacant. Term expires in December of 2012. Meetings are monthly on the second Tuesday at noon).

Mechanical Board of Adjustment, Appeals & Examiners

(Three positions are vacant. Term is four years. Meetings are quarterly at 10 a.m.)

Public Art Committee

(One position is vacant, and the term expires in December of 2011. Meetings are quarterly).

Public Library Board

(One position is vacant, and the term expires in June of 2012. Meetings are the fourth Thursday at 4 p.m.)
