CLEARWATER, FL — Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a waterspout suddenly appeared in the Gulf of Mexico and moved quickly ashore near Tower 2 on the south part of Clearwater Beach around 4 p.m. about 4 Friday.

Police said the water spout sent beach items flying into the air and caused minor injuries to two beach goers from Kansas — a 70-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man. Clearwater Fire & Rescue beach lifeguards were first on scene to treat the patients, followed by other fire department personnel. The two visitors were taken to Morton Plant Hospital for treatment.
