Coral Gables Teen Makes Waves in National Water Polo Championship

CORAL GABLES, FL—In a remarkable showcase of youthful talent and determination, Coral Gables' own Neil Kaan Kagitci, a standout student-athlete at Ponce de Leon Middle School, captured the coveted Nick Johnson Inspiration Award at the USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program (ODP) National Championships held March 14-16, 2025, in Northern California.

At just 15 years old, Kagitci was not only the youngest athlete among the Southeast Zone cadets competing at the championships, but also emerged from thousands of athletes nationwide to earn recognition that celebrates exceptional character, leadership, and athletic integrity.

The Nick Johnson Inspiration Award, established to honor athletes who embody the Olympic spirit and exemplify core ODP values—respect, sportsmanship, dedication, and resilience—marks a significant milestone for the young Coral Gables athlete, who trains intensively with Miami’s renowned water polo club, the Miami Riptides.

Kaan, balancing rigorous athletic commitments alongside academic responsibilities, has found unwavering support from his community, coaches, and teachers.
