Thousands Turn Out For XXXTentacion; Person Of Interest Named

Thousands of fans turned out to bid farewell to South Florida rapper XXXTentacion on Wednesday as police named a person of interest.

SUNRISE, FL — Thousands of fans turned out to bid farewell to South Florida rapper XXXTentacion on Wednesday as police named a person of interest in his murder. The artist was killed on June 18 in a brazen daytime shooting outside Riva Motorsports, where he had apparently been shopping for a motorcycle. Police have already charged one person in the slaying.

"The person detectives are interested in talking to is 22-year-old Robert Allen," according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. "They want to find out what he knows about the murder."

Police said Allen was captured on surveillance video outside Riva Motorsports the same day the rapper was shot as he was leaving the business.

XXXTentacion, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, was remembered Wednesday as thousands of fans lined up outside the BB&T Center in Sunrise to view the singer's open casket as his music was played.

"Homicide detectives have recovered the 2017 Dodge Journey that was used to block Onfroy as he was leaving RIVA Motorsports shortly before 4 p.m. June 18 when he was approached by two armed suspects in an apparent robbery," the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

Twenty-two-year-old Dedrick Devonshay Williams was later arrested in connection with the slaying during a traffic stop in nearby Pompano Beach. Williams was charged with unpremeditated first-degree murder and grand theft of a motor vehicle. Police also said he was driving without a valid license and had an outstanding warrant. He was on probation at the time of the slaying.

Attorney David Bogenschutz told the Associated Press that the rapper had visited a bank shortly before the shooting and possibly withdrew cash for the purchase, according to information the attorney said he was given by police.

XXXTentacion notched a No. 1 album in March with his sophomore effort “?″ and had a top 10 hit with “Sad!” but was facing trial on charges that he beat up his pregnant girlfriend.

In 2016, he was arrested on charges that included home invasion for a 2015 incident, and less than a month later was jailed on charges that he attacked his girlfriend, who was pregnant at the time. Later, he faced more charges, including witness tampering.

Police said the rapper was taken to nearby Broward Health North, where he was pronounced dead. The two men fled in a dark-color SUV, according to police.
