5 Things to Know for the Dunedin Highland Games
The daylong Scottish festival brings traditional athletic events, pipe and drum performances from bands across the region and dancing competitions on Saturday at Highlander Park in Dunedin.

The 46th Dunedin Highland Games celebrate the city's rich Scottish heritage at on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The daylong festival is jam-packed with Scottish athletic events, dancing, piping and drumming competitions, tug-of-war, sheep dog demonstrations and a even a live performance from Celtic-fusion band Seven Nation.

1) Cost: $10; children under 12 free with an adult.
2) Parking/Transportation: Park free at . The Jolley Trolley is providing free shuttle service between the school's north parking lot and between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. (It's about a 1-mile walk.)

3) About the Events:
- Althetic competitions (like a Scottish feats of strength) happen all day. Some of them include: throwing of the stone (100 pounds); the caber toss (roughly 20-foot pole, 100-150 pounds), weight throws (28-56 pounds); the Scottish hammer (16-22 pounds); and the sheaf toss (16-20 pound bag of hay).
- Piping and drumming events feature both individual amateur competitions and around 25 band performances. All of Dunedin's bands are performing, as well as bands from across the region and the state. Some are coming from as far as Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Panama City and Montevideo, Uruguay. - Dancing competitions on Saturday start at 9:30 a.m. (If you like what you see, you can participate in a free novice workshop on Sunday at the from 10 a.m. to noon, or an intermediate workshop from 12:30 to 3 p.m.)
- Bonus: Sheep dog presentations are scheduled throughout the day on the main field and Seven Nation performs (time to be announced). Click here for a full schedule of events.

5) Proceeds benefit the City of Dunedin Pipe Band, the Dunedin High School Scottish Highlander Band and the Dunedin Highland Middle School Band.
