William Rosebrook is urging a public show of support for Causeway concessionaire Glen Steinke at tonight's city commission meeting.

Rosebrook's hope is that a large group will sway the commission's vote in favor of breaking terms set in Steinke's soon-to-expire three-year contract for kayak rental concession services at Sail Honeymoon to go to a competitive bidding process and create a loophole that would allow him to stay with a longterm agreement.

Rosebrook spread his message through an informal Facebook campaign, leaving a message on Dunedin Patch Facebook Wednesday asking people to attend the 6:30 p.m. public meeting along with his group. Here is an excerpt:

"There is city parking behind the shops across the street, we will have name badges supporting Sail Honeymoon out side city hall this thursday March 7th. starting at 6:15 the meeting starts at 6:30 this is the first item on old business and should be coming up around 7:00 p.m. The more people that show up the better this will go. We know this is a lot to ask, but if there is any way you can make an appearance please, please show up. Beers and cheers or tears afterwards, at Eddies.

Glen Steinke and the city have an agreement in place until July 31, but the competitive bidding process was supposed to begin in January. The heart of the issue is whether the city should put out a request for proposal for that location or let Steinke continue to operate Sail Honeymoon without opening up that location to outside bidders, a requirement at the end of every other concessionaire's contract in the city.

The intent of the competitive bidding process is to protect the taxpayer dollar and ensure fairness and transparency in government services.

Both City Attorney Tom Trask and all of city staff are recomending the bidding process continue as planned.

What's your take? Should city leaders allow Sail Honeymoon to stay in its current location? Should city leaders make an allowance for one concessionaire contract, and not for others?
