Ban on Certain Fireworks Still In Effect In Pinellas

Independence Day celebrations can be full of flare without fireworks at home.

In fact, in Pinellas County the retail sale or purchase of fireworks that project into the air or explode is prohibited.

Pinellas County Public Safety Services urges residents to enjoy fireworks displays that are conducted by trained professionals. It’s fun, safe and economical.

Dunedin's Hometown USA Fourth of July celebration at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium begins at 4 p.m. It features a live performance from the Greg Billings Band, a Dunedin Blue Jays baseball game and a post-game fireworks display (9:30 pm).

Sparklers remain legal, but parents are reminded they can be dangerous, reaching temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. Only those over 12 years of age should handle sparklers of any type. Many young people get burned by sparklers every year so adult supervision is necessary at all times.

Officials urge citizens to use extreme caution and follow basic safety recommendations:

• Read all cautions and warnings.
• Use sparklers only outdoors.
• Use sparklers as intended - do not try to alter or combine them.
• Do not mix fireworks and alcohol.
• Never pick up fireworks that may be left over after the display, as they may still be active.
