Local Student Contends in Braille Challenge

Michelle Yongue competed in the Braille Challenge in California for the fourth year.

For Michelle Youngue, reading braille isn't just a mean to an end, it's a skill she likes to put to the test.
Youngue flew out to California for the National Braille Challenge on June 22, according to Tbo.com
This marks the fourth time Youngue has participated in the competition, which challenges contenders with proofreading, reading comprehension, speed and accuracy reading and more each year. This year, she was the only student representing the Tampa Bay area.Youngue has was born with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that causes her to slowly lose her vision.
Youngue, who just finished her first year at Palm Harbor University High School's International Baccalaureate program, didn't place this year, but still plans on taking the challenge next year.
