Students, school volunteers and staff are invited to the free viewing of "Sharkwater," a documentary, at Boca Ciega High School on Wednesday, April 25 after school.
It is not every day you have people on the news that want to change our society, or teenagers that make a stand for a belief that they hold true. My name is Kim Moskel, I teach Marine Science at Boca Ciega High School and my classes are hoping for a better tomorrow. They have decided to stand up for an animal who cannot speak for itself, the shark.
This school year, I showed the documentary "Sharkwater". A documentary that was based on a man (Rob Stewart) filming sharks that were being killed all over the world just for their fins. Fins to make shark fin soup an expensive delicacy to many. Sharks are an important part of our ecosystem; the oceans need sharks to keep all other organisms balanced. I have shown this documentary for many years as a teacher and this year the students were truly moved. They wanted to help sharks; they want shark finning to be stopped. As they watched this documentary and gasped at the heartless killing of sharks, they had an idea of something that we could do. Make shark finning known.

Rob Stewart had mentioned in the movie that we as humans have been taught our whole lives to fear the one animal we cannot live without – the shark. Many students felt the same way until they watched this documentary.
My students and I discussed their ideas within the classroom and together came up with a plan to watch this documentary, April 25, 2012 in our Auditorium after school. We would invite everyone here at The Boca Ciega High School to make the school aware of what is going on in the world and why shark finning is such a big deal. The viewing is free and open to all students, approved registered volunteers, and all staff of BCHS. Marine Science students will be selling refreshments, snacks and t-shirts throughout the showing. We also will be accepting donations too. After the event all proceeds will then be donated to www.savingsharks.com a foundation to help stop shark finning. This is a great cause and a large feat for our students to organize and implement.

If you are interested in becoming a part of cause, please see our volunteer coordinator Ms. Myles and she can get you registered through the county to be a volunteer.
Come help make a difference and show the students you support THEIR efforts and passion to stand up for what they believe in. The following is a quote from my student who had the guts to be the first to speak up with an idea of let’s make a change.
“We would greatly appreciate your help in making the change. The students of Boca Ciega as well as myself cannot do this alone. We all can make a difference in the world if we all just put in the effort.”
Thank you,
Kim Moskel
