Help Clean Up Lincoln Cemetery

LINCOLN CEMETERY CLEAN UP DAY SET FOR SATURDAY;

Volunteers Needed 

St. Petersburg, Fla. (November 18, 2011) – St. Petersburg City Council Member Wengay “Newt” Newton is coordinating a volunteer cleanup effort at the historic Lincoln Cemetery, 600 58th St. S., on Saturday, November 19, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

The final resting place for generations of African Americans, among them Civil War veterans, community leaders and ordinary citizens – as well as Newton’s mother – the Lincoln Cemetery is  located on the edge of St. Petersburg and the city of Gulfport.

Volunteers are needed. The public is also invited to lend a hand by bringing lawn maintenance tools, small equipment such as weed trimmers, water and refreshments.

“The place is definitely in need of attention. We’re simply attempting to see what we can accomplish in one day’s work to address this issue in our community,” Newton stated.  “Our goal is to help improve the appearance of the place and show respect for those buried there and their survivors.”

The cleanup is being supported by Keep Pinellas Beautiful, Anderson-McQueen Funeral Homes and the city of Gulfport. Parking will be available at Boca Ciega High School.
