Week in Review: Debby's Impact on Gulfport

One week ago today Tropical Storm Debby made a first impression on Gulfport. High waves on the Gulf started early but wind picked up, rain came down and by late afternoon downtown Gulfport was underwater. Let's take a look back at our top storm stories.

Sunday

Gulfport Beach Underwater, Downtown Streets Flooded, Kayakers Spotted: Low lying streets in Gulfport, including Beach and Shore Boulevards, are nearly impassible. The downpour of rain combined with higher tides and breaking waves has left Gulfport Beach underwater.

Monday

Downtown Gulfport Remains Flooded: CERT members Bob and Lou Worthington said at least three sailboats washed ashore Sunday night. Two, including a 40-foot sailboat, were removed near Veteran's Park, but one was anchored near the Gulfport Recreation Center this morning.

Tuesday

Video: Debby Causes Coastal Flooding: High tide and rough winds flood streets in downtown Gulfport again. Businesses on Beach and Shore piled up sandbags on Tuesday in the hopes of keeping their shops and restaurants dry.

Wednesday

Crews Clean up After Debby: Mounds of seagrass, as large as cars, can be seen at Gulfport Beach today. City crews are using a skid loader and other heavy equipment to pile seagrass, leaves and other debris that Tropical Storm Debby washed ashore.

Cleaning up Gulfport Beach One Bag at a Time: Gulfport resident Jane Ogilvie went out for a morning walk and discovered trash along her route. That's when she started picking up the discarded items and quickly filled nearly a dozen bags.

: The tropical storm washed hundreds of eggs out to sea. Humans interfered by bringing young chicks into the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, ending their chance to learn to forage on their own in the wild.
