Gulfport Firefighters Recognized for Rescue

On January 26, Gulfport firefighters responded to a house fire on Hull Street and rescued Jody Lee Hutchings. Hutchings was resuscitated on scene but died two days later from her injuries. Four firefighters were recognized for their efforts Tuesday night.

Gulfport Firefighters Lt. Pete Huffman, Rene Fernandez, Timothy Burton and Christopher Mathis were recognized and thanked for their lifesaving efforts in a recent house fire.

Gulfport Fire Chief James Marenkovic and the Gulfport City Council presented the "Shift A" firefighters with a Certificate of Appreciation during Tuesday night's City Council Meeting at Catherine Hickman Theater.

The firefighters responded to the fire on Thursday, January 26 after Gulfport Police Officer Jennifer Crowson responded to a welfare check, saw smoke and called for help at 907 Hull St.

The firefighters entered the house, where they found Jody Lee Hutchins unconscious in the bedroom.

Firefighters performed life saving techniques before she was transported to Palms of Pasadena Hospital with life threatening injuries. Two days later, Hutchings died as a result of her injuries.
