Gulfport On The Rocks: Sports Bar by Day, Music Venue by Night

As the 10th anniversary of Gulfport On The Rocks approaches, owner Sherrye Doucette is happy to still be a crucial piece of the city puzzle. 

Doucette says that she has been in the hospitality industry "forever"– since she was 14 years old. Gulfport on the Rocks is Doucette's first venture as a bar owner. 

Growing up in a small town in Massachusetts, Doucette says that Gulfport is somewhat like home. "It's got that small town charm, but yet still it's conveniently located- you're within an hour of everything," said Doucette. 

Ten years ago, Doucette set out to find a property in Florida that she could eventually call her own. Doucette knew she wanted a bar, so she started on the southwestern coast near Naples. 

Just before she left to go back to Massachusetts, Doucette saw an ad for a space in Gulfport. It was love at first sight. "I came and checked it out," remembered Doucette. "I liked the atmosphere, and it felt good, so we just went on from there."

Gulfport on the Rocks is still standing, despite rough patches the economy has faced in recent years. "We are fortunate to have a locally-based clientele," said Doucette. "That's what keeps us going, year round."

Island time mentality sets Gulfort On The Rocks apart from other establishments. Doucette referred to the bar as something for "everybody."

"Everybody's welcome, and it's all about having a good time," said Doucette.

Doucette says that a claim to fame for Gulfport On The Rocks is Rays fever during baseball season. The bar plays headquarters for local Rays fans, with "crazy good drink specials" and all the "hootin' and hollerin' " one can handle.
