Gulfport Welcomes Award Winning Journalist Thomas French

Pulitzer Prize winner, former St. Petersburg Times Reporter and known author Thomas French lured more than 100 people to the Circle of Friends 1st Annual Meeting Thursday night.

In Gulfport Thomas French is known for writing "Unanswered Cries" and "Zoo Story: Life in the Garden of Captives."

"Unanswered Cries" is the true story about the murder of Karen Gregory in her Gulfport home in 1984. French was a reporter for the St. Petersburg Times for nearly 30 years and covered the Karen Gregory murder investigation and trial. He now teaches at the Indiana University School of Journalism.

When organizers asked French to be a guest speaker, he didn't hesitate to accept the invitation. During Thursday night's meeting, French shared his love of reading and writing.

"It's at the heart of everything I do," French said.

The Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Library marks it's one year anniversary this week and organizers hope the success of their 1st annual meeting encourages people to join the organization. Their goal is to enhance literacy and learning in Gulfport. Annual dues are $10.
