LAKELAND, FL — The mother of a 2-year-old boy who was killed in Polk County April 8 while she was at work was arrested Friday on charges of negligent child abuse causing great bodily harm and accessory after the fact of capital felony, according to WFLA.

Her boyfriend, 30-year-old, Alegray Jones who is accused of beating the victim to death was arrested on aggravated manslaughter charges, but were later upgraded to first-degree murder charges earlier in the month, according to authorities.

Twenty-five-year-old Vershundra Day was aware her boyfriend, Alegray Jones, hit her son and still left the boy in Jones' care, the outlet reported. She told authorities that she knew Jones disciplined the victim in a way that she didn't like. She knew that her 2-year-old son was afraid of Jones, the TV station reported.
