Bomb Squad Called to Largo Bank Robbery

A suspect made off with cash and left behind a backpack he claimed contained an explosive device, Largo Police said.

The bomb squad has determined the backpack did not contain any explosives, Largo Police said Monday afternoon.

Detectives are continuing the investigation.

The Tampa Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene of a Largo bank robbery Monday morning after a suspect claimed a backpack he was carrying contained an explosive device, authorities said.

The man entered Fifth Third Bank, 1698 Missouri Ave., around 9:30 a.m. carrying the backpack, Largo Police said. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of money, he fled on a bicycle and left the backpack behind.

The bank was evacuated, and bomb squad personnel were on the scene examining the backpack, officials said in a media release sent shorty after noon Monday.

The investigation is still ongoing.

The suspect was about 5-foot-9 with a thin build and was wearing all black clothing and black, red and white tennis shoes, witnesses told police.
