Pinellas County’s 2017 School Grades Released

LARGO, FL — Pinellas County Schools maintained an overall B grade at the district level in the 2016-17 academic year. According to data released by the Florida Department of Education on Wednesday, the district had seven schools improve to an A grade during the year and 11 saw their grades rise to a B.

Across Florida, the number of schools earning A or B grades rose to 57 percent, up from 46 percent in the 2015-16 academic year, according to FDOE. The state said its elementary schools saw the largest percentage point increase in A schools with some 30 percent, or 542 schools, making that grade in 2016-17. The number is up from 386 schools, or 21 percent from 2015-16.

In Pinellas County, academic leaders are pleased with strides made, but acknowledge more work needs to be done.

“Our commitment to academic rigor and quality instruction is reflected in the significant improvement in letter grades throughout the district,” Michael A. Grego, Pinellas Schools superintendent, said in a statement. “The most important element to school success is strong leadership and dedicated teachers. We will continue to build on our success and learn from our challenges until all schools in Pinellas earn an A or B.”

The state’s grades are based on 11 different factors that include student achievement, learning gains statewide, high school graduation rates and standardized tests, among others. Grades are intended to “provide parents and the general public an easily understandable way to measure the performance of a school and understand how well each school is serving its students,” a state media release said.
