WHY: Dementia strikes 1 in every 13 LGBT seniors. Even with recent advances in LGBT rights, LGBT older adults are often marginalized and face discrimination. They are twice as likely to age without a spouse or partner, twice as likely to live alone and three to four times less likely to have children, greatly limiting their opportunities for support. In addition, Florida has the second highest incidence rate of Alzheimer's in the nation with more than 580,000 Floridians living with the disease.
