Patch has teamed up with T-Mobile to spotlight five standout athletes whose achievements have left a lasting mark on our community. While this list is just a snapshot, there are countless others who have helped shape the rich sports culture in our area.


1. Dorothy "Dot" Richardson (Softball)

A trailblazer in softball, Orlando native Dot Richardson is renowned for her exceptional skill and leadership on the field. She was a key player for Team USA, winning gold medals at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. Beyond her athletic achievements, Richardson is a respected orthopedic surgeon and serves as the head softball coach at Liberty University. Richardson's legacy extends beyond the diamond, inspiring generations through her multifaceted career and dedication to excellence.

2. Darryl Dawkins (Basketball)

A towering figure in basketball history, Darryl Dawkins, also known as "Chocolate Thunder," captivated fans with his powerful dunks and larger-than-life personality. Dawkins made NBA history as the first player to be drafted directly out of high school. He graduated from Maynard Evans High School in Orlando and went on to play for teams like the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets. Known for his backboard-shattering dunks, he left a lasting impact on the game both on and off the court.


3. Teahna Daniels (Track and Field)

Teahna Daniels has made her mark as a sprinter on the international stage. Specializing in the 100-meter and 200-meter events, she represented Team USA at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, earning a silver medal in the 4x100-meter relay. Daniels' journey began in Orlando, where she attended The First Academy and cultivated her talent for sprinting. Her impressive collegiate career at the University of Texas further solidified her status as one of the sport's brightest talents.

4. Chucky Atkins (Basketball)

Kenneth Lavon "Chucky" Atkins carved out a successful career in the NBA as a skilled point guard known for his tenacity and leadership on the court. Born and raised in Orlando, he attended Maynard Evans High School, where his basketball talent began to shine. Playing for several teams, including the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers and Detroit Pistons, Atkins became a reliable presence in the professional leagues.


5. Eric Griffin (Basketball)

Eric Griffin has built an impressive basketball career, playing professionally across the globe and showcasing his versatility as a forward. Born in Orlando, Griffin attended Boone High School, where his talent for basketball first emerged. After going undrafted in the 2012 NBA Draft, he gained recognition through stints in the NBA Summer League and overseas leagues, representing teams in countries like Italy, Israel and Australia.
